How do I prepare a good fire for cooking over?

  • Build a small starter fire with kindling and smaller logs, and let the wood burn for at least 30 minutes, adding larger pieces of wood as needed.  This will give you a nice, warm base of coals for when you’re ready to cook.  A fire of hot coals is easier to control for cook times and temperatures than a big flame.
  • Be prepared with oven mitts and the right cooking tools to make your meal a success!
